President’s Message
It is an honour to have been asked to serve as President of The Dolphin Society. In an ever evolving social and commercial landscape for nearly 275 years; the Society has constantly tailored its support for the elderly, infirm and disabled of our community. A principal aim being to find ways to help people remain in their homes, promoting independence rather than communal living. The money we raise from our networks and friends during the Annual Appeal goes directly towards the initiatives we support, with our dedicated Committee freely giving their time, over the course of the year, to make this possible.
The Dolphin Society has an enduring track record of “seed philanthropy” which we are always looking to continue. The aim is always to use our grants as leverage to prove concepts and encourage ones that are particularly effective to be taken up by government locally and nationally. In the past, the Society was known as a pioneer for pendant alarms, enabling those who would not normally be able to afford them to feel confident at home alone. Perhaps Dolphin’s most notable success was the “Home From Hospital” project, facilitating the NHS to make beds available swiftly by ensuring that people’s homes are quickly assessed and adapted to allow the healthy elderly to get home as soon as practical. This is a model we are delighted has now been adopted nationally.
This year we will be working with our partners to address the challenges of “Digital Exclusion” in later life, helping people access the funds they might not otherwise be able to and also keeping them connected in their homes, in an increasingly digital world.
We could not do all of these things without the help of our philanthropy partners and the generous support of our personal donors, family trusts and commercial contributions. On behalf of all of the people who rely on the Dolphin Society, thank you.

How you can help
The Society relies entirely on donations to continue helping older and disabled people in need, in the Bristol area. Our annual appeal goes out in October and, by tradition, closes on 14th November but we welcome donations from individuals, trusts or legacies at any time.
